Jack glided through the door and scooped Sally up in his arms. “Happy anniversary.’’ he sang happily, kissing her lightly.
She laughed. “Happy Anniversary.’’
He placed a large rose into her hands. “For my lady.’’
She blushed and laughed again. “Jack-’’
“Before you say anything, please note that I won’t listen.’’ he said, swinging her around and dipping her.
“Not a word?’’
“Nope! Not a word.’’
She giggled as he pressed his lips to her neck, arms wrapped around his chest.
It was their first wedding anniversary and had it had been a glorious year.
“Do you remember that time the Dr grounded you?’’
Sally nodded. “And he locked you in your room? Do you remember what I did then?’’
Sally nodded again, blushing as he brushed the hair from her collarbone.
“I stole you away.’’ he whispered, bringing her up and close again, pressing his lips to her ear.
They stood there for a moment, wrapped into each other until he pulled away, taking her hand and tugging at it lightly.
“We’re going out.’’
She smiled flirtatiously. “Wouldn’t you rather…..” she nodded slightly to the bedroom door. “Stay in tonight?’’
His eyes widened and he smiled sneakily. “If you insist my dear-’’ he swept her up, holding her bridal style. “Then to the bedroom we go!’’
They stumbled through the bedroom door, falling onto the bed, laughing like lunatics.
“Jack?’’
He looked down at her. “Yes beloved.’’
She hesitated for a moment. “I love you.’’
He kissed her. “I love you too, beloved.’’
He took her into his arms, once again amazed at how well she molded him so perfectly.
There was a clap of thunder from outside and the sound of rain drilled against the window.
Reaching up, he turned off the light and tucked her underneath him, wanting to make her feel like the queen that she was, wanting her to understand how much he loved and adored her.
They lay there, listening to the rain, still entwined.
He took the rose off the side table and ran it up her arm, loving the way she blushed and smiled.
“Happy anniversary.’’ he said, dusting her nose lightly with the rose. “Do you feel special?’’
Sally laughed, leaning her head against his shoulder. “Very.’’
“Good. Oh!” he reached over her, opened the drawer of the side table, and took out a long velvet box. “I saw this and thought of you.’’
She looked stunned as she opened the box, gasping when she saw what lay inside.
A silver and orange necklace with emerald encrusted pumpkins and slinky steel threads with a heart clasp.
“I thought it’d match your eyes.’’
Tears stabbed at her eyes as she shook her head. “I can’t-’’
He took the box from her. “Turn around.’’
She did as he told her and he strung the necklace around her. She turned back to him and he smiled. “Just as I thought….Your beauty outshines this necklace.’’
She blushed, laughing slightly.
“You hungry?’’
Before she could reply the aroma of food wafted in from the other room. Jack smiled at the look on her face.
“You made dinner?’’
“You say that like it’s a huge surprise.’’ he said, laughing. He tugged at her hand. “Come come, I worked hard on this.’’
He pulled her off the bed and into the den and she gasped at the sight of the small arrangement in front of the fireplace.
“Jack.’’ she said as they sat down. “this is amazing.’’
He smiled down at her. “I wanted to make this day perfect for you.’’
Blushing she placed her hand over his. “It’d be special either way.’’
Warmth spread throughout his body as he leaned in and kissed her, smiling. She always had a way of making him feel so happy….
The doorbell rang and Jack grimaced. Ignoring it, he turned back to Sally. A second later, it rang again.
“Who could that be at this cursed hour?’’ he said angrily.
Getting up, he went to answer it. But to his annoyance and surprise there was nobody there.
“Who is it?’’ Sally said, coming up behind him.
“Its….nobody.’’ he said blankly, sticking his head out and looking to both sides.
But little did they know that it wasn’t nobody.
Across the street, unseen by them, stood a figure in the shadows, hidden among the trees. He wore a long tattered coat and his face was stitched together like ugly bags.
“So this is where they are.’’ Oogie Anderson said, a smirk cutting across his destroyed face. “Fantastic.’’ he watched as Jack pulled his head back in and smiled down at Sally. “Enjoy your happiness while you can, Jack. It’ll be gone before you know it.''
and with that, he vanished back into the shadows.
